Renovation Project

Maine Park Improvements

The Park Ridge Park District was awarded a $7,000 grant from the Openlands ComEd Green Region Program to construct the Pollinator Garden at Maine Park. The garden is located around the Park Sign in the front of the building. The pollinator garden includes native plants selected to attract pollinators as well as a brick paver pathway to encourage visitors to walk through the area to enjoy the plants and view the pollinators in action. The intent of the garden is to provide a habitat for pollinator species utilizing a balance of host plants, nectar plants, and shelter plants. We eagerly await the bloom of the plants this spring. An interpretive sign to educate visitors about pollinators will also be added to the area later this year.

Autumn 2020, construction of the outdoor nature classroom for the Wildwood Nature Center Preschool program located at the Maine Park Leisure Center will begin. With the renovation to the Maine Park Leisure Center in 2017, two indoor classrooms for Nature Preschool were created. Each of these classrooms feature external doors that lead directly to the area where an Outdoor Nature Classroom will be developed. The Outdoor Nature Classroom will be an extension of the indoor classroom, and will allow our little learners a broad variety of learning experiences and opportunities to grow physically, cognitively, psychologically, and academically. The Outdoor Classroom will feature a garden area, water table, digging area, messy materials area, building area, climbing areas, perennial garden and plantings, and a stage for music and movement, as well as seating and gathering areas. The entire site will also be ADA accessible. The project is budgeted at $55,000, and is funded in part by the donations raised by the Park Ridge Friends of the Parks. To learn more of their fundraising efforts, please visit the Park Ridge Friends of the Park website.
