If you are visiting Centennial Park or any of our parks please be aware of the red-winged blackbirds. During the mating and breeding seasons, which run from late May to August, this species can be extremely territorial and may exhibit aggressive behavior in defense of their nests. If the male bird feels threatened or believes the female and nest are in danger, males are known to swoop, peck, or grab at humans.
We recommend the following tips:
- Give plenty of distance between yourself and the nest whenever possible.
- Take an alternate route.
- Wear a hat when walking through a nesting area.
- Do not allow children to get too close or provoke them.
Signs are currently posted at Centennial Park where there have been sightings of a red-winged blackbird. Please proceed with caution and or take an alternative route.
Red-winged blackbirds are protected under the U.S. Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Harming/capturing these birds, or disturbing their nests, could lead to fines or jail time.
