The solar panels at Oakton Sports Complex are officially up and running!
Oakton Sports Complex Solar array includes 638 kW of solar panels on the turf roof and studio rink roof (1,082 panels and 9 inverters), which absorb sunlight and convert it into DC (direct current) electricity.
Because buildings and the electrical grid run on AC power, the system sends the DC electricity from the panels to a 550kW inverter system. The inverters convert DC to AC and regulate the flow of electricity. This 550 kW value is the maximum AC output the system can deliver to Oakton.
As the system operates throughout the seasons, it is estimated to produce approximately 684.7 MWh of clean energy annually. This measures the actual amount of electricity the system generates over time – not just its size or capacity. Which is helpful for a facility that uses a lot of energy like Oakton Sports Complex!
